3D Hotel booking transactions in Google Earth

I was really pleased to see that my colleague Jerome Bertrand (no relation) from the Dutch company Geo-Games produced a short demo video to show how they have been developing a way to offer geo-browsing support and booking transaction sites right from the start - to the finish. It’s not a bad project for now although I still tend to think that the consumer interface needs a bit of work. Please see the demo at : <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWd77jBrlO4

Get your IKEA furniture on Second Life

STOCKHOLM, May 30 /PRNewswire/ — Second House of Sweden - Sweden’s embassy in the virtual world of Second Life - has opened its doors to the public. Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt this morning cut the ribbon at an inauguration ceremony Broadcast simultaneously to press conferences in Stockholm and in Budapest.(

Second House of Sweden is inspired by the real-life House of Sweden in Washington, D.C., which houses the Embassy of Sweden to the United States.
The setting for the virtual embassy is the picturesque Stockholm Archipelago.Inside and around the Second House of Sweden there is a wealth of exhibits and information. Some examples:

- A recreation of Raoul Wallenberg’s office in Budapest, with a
re-enactment of his last day of freedom on January 16, 1945. (In cooperation with the OSA Archivum in Budapest)

- An art exhibit, curated by Nationalmuseum in Stockholm

- Royalty-free images of Sweden, fact sheets about politics, industry,
design, art as well as virtual Swedish food, with real recipes attached

- Throughout the region, listen to Radio Sweden’s daily news podcasts in English

- Furniture by Swedish wood manufacturers and IKEA - some of which
visitors can use to furnish their virtual homes in Second Life.

Second House of Sweden has already generated great interest both in Sweden and abroad, according to Stefan Geens, project leader at the Swedish Institute: “Now that we have a platform in Second Life to promote the culture and lifestyle of Sweden, many Swedish companies and organizations are interested in collaborating.

———————————-

From a DMO point of view probably the most innovative move I have seen in 10 years or so, from a pure marketing standpoint a very dubious move. I’ll check back in a year. You can however see that virtual worlds are getting to be more than a hype for business promotional purposes. I love the Swedes for their boldness in taking this first step especially for the purposes of export and tourism promotion where are the followers to create the trend?

Catchyoo.com: Very cool break through in advertising

Catchyoo.com, a Japanese company is giving creatives a very cool new way of interaction between advertiser and consumer. This form of interactive advertising allows you to design visual, sounds, narrative and copy and promote them on floors, walls, ceilings anywhere on a clean white background.  The beauty of this soultion lies in the incredibly clear and crisp imagery and sound.

“Based on sensors installed in the projection system, people can physically interact with the ad by waving their hands or walking on the ad. Catchyoo has become the new trend to promote hi-tech products e.g. iPhone because it is immediate, colorful, playful, stylish and effective and it draws attention from a crowd. ”

I recommend you actually watch several of the videos which demonstrate this new product, it will inspire you!

An embodied agent in augmented reality

Cognitive intelligence is really still something which is far on the horizon but this project certainly gives a good glimpse into the future where media may literally be materialized into a cognitive form.

MIRAGE is an embodied, graphical agent that can communicate with users about real and virtual objects in the user’s environment. A user enters the augmented reality room and puts on the “magic glasses”. Through the glasses the user can still see the room, but superimposed is now the floating graphical image of MIRAGE.

The room that MIRAGE lives in is fitted with trackers that make Mirage appear to be stationary in a particular location in the room, and as the user walks around, Mirage can follow the user with its gaze. Mirage can answer questions about real objects in the room posed by the user, and can perceive pointing gestures by the user, enabling questions such as “what is that [pointing at an arbitrary object]?”, “who is logged in on that machine [pointing at a computer in the room]?”. MIRAGE also has a direct feed to on-line news information that is automatically generated by natural language algorithms every night, allowing users to ask for the latest news.

In the future we hope that technology similar to MIRAGE will be used to teach operators of power plants and take people on guided museum tours, as well as tours of caves and historical sites.

This project was done as part of a graduate computer science course at Columbia University, using the modular A.I. engineering principles of Constructionist A.I.

Computer Generated News Videos - News at Seven

When I saw this it was as if a few really big things came together for me. Here we have an example of a few things I know agencies have been trying to pull off for the past year. The combination text to speech, streaming flash video, avatars all put togetherat Northwestern University’s InfoLab. I am not going to dwell on the basic elemen,ts because if you have been reading my blog regularly you know where to get those parts and if I may add of significant better quality.

The real innovation here is the ability to dynamically generate a virtual newscast on a specific topic using a podcast broadcasting, transferring text data to speech.

Trendhunter adds an example for use: “Imagine the immediate potential of virtually collected, produced & packaged content for Second Life and other virtual social networks. Additionally, consumer use could lead to a complete redefinition of what it means to have a personal RSS Reader.”

Although I do not think we are waiting around for a new personal RSS reader I do think that the novelty effect would work well within an integrated media strategy.

CBS Embraces Partnerships to Navigate its Interactive Future

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Consumer Electronic Show (CES) — Leslie Moonves, President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS Corporation (NYSE: CBS - News and CBS.A - News), gave the keynote address at the 40th Annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, sharing the stage with a wide range of stars from the interactive community. Joining Moonves were talent from within the CBS Corporation, followed by several partners and associates that CBS is working with in the digital space.

“There’s no such thing as old or new media anymore. We’re just media,” Moonves said. “Whether ‘programming’ means CSI or C++, we’re all playing on the same big digital field.” In his remarks, Moonves emphasized CBS’s multi-faceted approach to embracing the digital opportunity. “In some cases, we’re developing our ideas entirely in house. And in other cases we’re forming partnerships to bring ideas to life,” he said.

Moonves cited a recent CBS report that showed 53% of fans who watched a TV show online turned around and watched the show on the network. “The more the public becomes connected to digital media, the more engaged they become with the content, and with each other.” Introducing those from within the CBS Corporation, Moonves said, “These individuals represent all kinds of perspectives and expertise, and are some of CBS’s most visionary intrapraneurs.”

Featured were:

* Anthony Zuiker, Creator of CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, the world’s
largest television franchise. Zuiker described the transformation of his
initial idea into the multi-platform global hit that it is today,
stressing how audience participation has added to the show’s success.

* College Sports Television Founder and President Brian Bedol. Bedol
showcased CSTV’s sports community platform FansOnly, which allows
friends to create their own viewing groups in a virtual Skybox.

* Radio personalities Gregg Hughes and Anthony Cumia, hosts of THE OPIE &
ANTHONY SHOW. Hughes and Cumia explained how online video is turning the
entire world into a virtual studio by inviting listeners to participate
in real-time and by allowing them to stay with the show even when it’s
not on the airwaves.

* Ilene Chaikin and Jennifer Beals, creator and star of Showtime’s THE L
WORD. Chaikin and Beals provided a demonstration of OurChart.com, a new
social networking web site for the lesbian community inspired by the
show.

Moonves then invited several companies that CBS is working with to share the stage. Highlighting the pivotal role of collaboration in shaping the future of content, Moonves said, “These companies are helping us extend the digital and interactive reach of our world class assets, and to build deeper connections with our audiences.” Featured were:

* Linden Lab Founder and CEO, Philip Rosedale. Rosedale showcased the
online virtual world Second Life, where users can create and shape their
content experience each time they enter the space. Rosedale also showed
a machimina, produced by Electric Sheep, featuring two impassioned Star
Trek fans. Following Rosedale’s remarks, Moonves announced that CBS will
be partnering with Electric Sheep to build a Star Trek environment
within Second Life.

* Sling Media Co-Founder and CEO Blake Krikorian. Krikorian introduced a
new application and service from Sling Media called Clip+Sling. Together
with CBS, Sling Media is beta testing a new technology designed to help
audiences share short segments of programming. See related release:
“Sling Media and CBS Announce Beta Test Of New Delivery System for
Video.”

* Chad Hurley, Co-Founder and CEO of YouTube. Hurley talked about the
success of CBS Corporation content on YouTube, and highlighted a contest
that gives YouTube users a chance to have their 15-second personal
message broadcast during CBS Sports Coverage of Super Bowl XLI on
Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007. “Seeing YouTube evolve into a centerpiece of
CBS’s entertainment plans makes me incredibly proud,” Hurley said. (See
related release: “User Generated Video Goes from Online to On-Air in New
CBS/YouTube Campaign.”)

“Anything is possible,” Moonves said. “Audiences know that, content people know that, and innovators in the digital space know that. In the weeks and months to come, we’ll have a lot more news on how we’ll be working with the interactive community in ways both big and small,” Moonves concluded.
