fring.com, ‘free’ mobile calls through wifi

You know when you ask someone to comment on something you think is important and they just end up starting a whole new conversation. This is what happend when I asked my friend Amit from Israel for his two cents on the SIPphone launching a Gizmo Call which since yesterday evening is just completely not important anymore.

This is because I just fell in love with this service called fringe. Uncomplicated, unattached and a little uh mysterious… I hope this isnt just a crush.
So what, who and where is Fringe?

What: fring uses your mobile internet connection to make peer-to-peer VoIP calls, send instant messages and talk with VoIP applications such as Skype and Google Talk, at no extra cost.

Who: Great question in fact, I know he lives in Fringland. There my be a wierd correlation between this and the incredible killer bees story from last week. It’s awfully exciting and mysterious in any case.
Where is Fring now : Fringe is here: http://www.fring.com

Shopdropping Workshop in NYC (opposite of shoplifting)

Eyebeam has announeced a daylong Shopdropping Workshop led by the infamous Anti-Advertising Agency.

“Shopdropping (the opposite of shoplifting) is a tactic used by artists and activists to clandestinely place objects in retail stores. “Dropped” objects are usually versions of consumer products altered or recreated to detourn the retail experience. Shopdropping is a fun and easy form of culture jamming, gently subverting dominant cultural forms to create new meanings.

Starting at noon, participants will receive a shopdropping overview, including artists’ shopdropping projects information and demonstrations of the necessary tools for shopdropping, and time will be given to test out some of the techniques discussed. Immediately following, participants will head into the field to help distribute a new, unreleased Anti-Advertising Agency project (as well as some creations of their own) into stores around Manhattan. This workshop will begin at Eyebeam, 540 W. 21st Street (between 10th & 11th Aves), and is open to the public free of charge. If you have a digital camera of any kind, please bring it.”

First launch for Yahoo! brand universe

Last November Yahoo! told us that they were in the course of developing their brand universe. This week the first of many was launched on Yahoo! It is being heralded all over the web as a very smart move by Yahoo! Basically what they have done is identified over 100 brands popular on their ranking and launch a branded minisite which pulls in content from all over Yahoo!.What you end up with is a dynamic Web 2.0 site with media and content pulled up from for example Flickr and Delicious. Add to this Yahoo videos, various widgets and a slick design and we end up with something which looks rather attractive.

At the moment it is not clear if these initiatives are being sponsored by brands as there is a clear value behind the project as a brand awareness prop. In the past I have witnessed a lot of investment in online brand awareness campaign especially by larger global advertisers and this may have the horrible effect of making advertising people feel well .. rather insignificant.

Please feel free to post comment on this development I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Write something nice

Sugar and Spice a MFA Thesis project of Amy Papaelias, sees typography as “Visual Pronunciation”… it makes everything you write taste just a little sweeter. The demo instantly converts all your blasphemy back into what your 2nd grade English teacher would approve of. It’s all very nice.

New Web 2.0 launches

convincemelogoAs posted on Techcrunch:: “ConvinceMe is a new competitive arguing site launching tonight. It will let debaters carry out public debates, head to head arguments, and a “King of the Hill” free for all about any subject they like. Other argument sites, like Hot Soup and LoveToLead, have focused on sobering issues, like political or philosophical debates and polls. Comment threads and forums have also been great places for people to argue. Just look at the comments for Do the Right Thing.”

HeyWatch.com an online service, lets users upload videos and transcode them to any of a number of formats.

PriceProtectr is a neat new tool that helps you take advantage of guarantees by many online retailers to refund the difference on purchased items if the price drops in the 30 or 60 days following your purchase (example - Best Buy’s policy).

Amie Street aims to make it easy and affordable for consumers to discover new independent music. What makes it unique? Every song sold at the ‘fly little music site’ starts off being free and the price increases to a maximum of USD 0.98 depending on how many people download it. The more popular a song, the faster its price will increase to 98 cents. Besides giving early buyers a better deal, the market price system gives them the added pleasure of seeing they’ve discovered a song or artist before everyone else has.

Renkoo is another party planning site that aims to improve on the Evite model. Renkoo’s main twist is the variety of party types that it allows you to create and some cool chat/SMS features. Creating an invite in Renkoo gives you a myriad of choices ranging from the vague email inviting friends to lunch this week, to the specific, “ I’m having a party on x date.”
